DIY Rainbow Sensory Recipes Melbourne

The Sensory Specialist loves all things Sensory Play - These are some of our favourite recipes you can make with things at home.

Below are a few of our favourite, quick and easy DIY activities you can make at home! Most importantly, these recipes use non-toxic ingredient pantry items, making them safe for little mouths.

Home made Play Dough Recipe

In a bowl, combine:

  • 1 1/2 cups of Plain Flour
  • 2 Tbs Vegetable Oil
  • 2 Tbs Cream of Tartar
  • 1/2 cup of Salt

Add several drops of food colouring to 1 cup of boiling water. To add an extra sensory element, consider adding a few drops of an essential oil such as mandarin or peppermint to the mix to give the play dough a scent.

Combine the wet and dry ingredients, and knead together until it's a smooth play dough consistency.

Expert tip - For long lasting storage - add a splash of vegetable oil to the play dough and store it in a zip lock bag.

Rainbow Rice Recipe

Rainbow rice is a great sensory play texture as it can be poured and scooped and is a super cheap ingredient. Store your Rainbow rice in a sealed container and keep using it again and again!

  • Place rice in a snap lock bag with several drops of food dye and a splash of water
  • Shake until the rice is completed covered in dye
  • Spread out onto an oven tray and let it air dry (approx 20 mins)
  • Repeat the process for each different colour

Rainbow Sensory Spaghetti

Coloured spaghetti not only looks fun and is slimy to touch, but it can be played with in a number of ways. Practice cutting skills by cutting the pasta with scissors, role play a Cafe scenario, or just get your hands messy with it in a tub.

Recipe:

  • Cook pasta till al dente
  • Rinse with water
  • Place pasta in a snap lock bag with several drops of food dye and 1/2 Tsp of water.
  • Mix until the pasta is all coloured.
  • In a colander, rinse off residue dye (this stops dye from staining hands!)
  • Place on paper towel to absorb the moisture
  • Repeat for each colour

Rainbow Sensory Ice

The perfect solution for some messy sensory play in the backyard.

  • In an ice cube tray, add one drop of food colouring to each section (use a variety of different colours to get rainbow ice)
  • Fill the remaining ice cube tray with water
  • Freeze in the freezer until set
  • Empty your ice cubs onto a play table, water table or play tub
  • Let your little one have fun with exploration play!
